Getting from Kota Kinabau to the Tip of Borneo is not as difficult as it may seem. You can use Grab, rent a car, take a taxi, or take a flight – there are now no buses making this journey.

Grab

By road, it is 180km from Kota Kinabalu to the Tip of Borneo, and the journey will take just over 3 hours. A Grab ride will cost around 160 MYR.

If you are travelling in a small group and don’t have your own car, this will be the cheapest option – yes, even cheaper than flying or getting a shared taxi! This is because those two methods will only take you to the town of Kudat, from there you would still have to get a local taxi from the town to the Tip of Borneo.

Self-drive

If you don’t already have one, renting a car and making this journey yourself is a great option.

This allows you to see the breathtaking scenery Sabah has to offer on route at your own pace, and make as many stops as you want on the way.

Many restrooms will charge you a small fee to use them here – did you know that most petrol stations have free to use restrooms on site!

Taxi

You can take a shared taxi from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat. These will depart Kota Kinabalu from the bus station near Padang Merdeka, and you will be dropped off at the Ria Hotel in Kudat.

The best time to get a shared taxi is between 08:00AM and 10:00AM – you will likely need to wait – taxis will only leave when they are full. Price person is 25 MYR.

From the Ria Hotel in Kudat, you will need to get another local taxi to the Tip of Borneo. This will cost 80 – 100 MYR one way per car.

Flight

Kudat does have an airport – in reality it is just an airstrip! MASWings are the airline you will want. Flights take 40 minutes and cost less than 100 MYR one way.

The airport here is 25km from the Tip of Borneo and a 30-minute drive. You will need to take a local taxi to the Tip. This will cost 80 – 100 MYR one way per car.
