Living in hotels for work can often feel like a chore – but it doesn’t have to be. By making a few small changes you can make business travel a lot more enjoyable and a lot cheaper!

Take your Amazon Fire TV Stick

Being able to pick up where you left off on your favorite TV series from Netflix or Amazon Prime will add a little bit of normality. Plus, it definitely beats the standard free view on offer with hotel TVs.

Amazon have specifically ensured Fire TV Sticks will work with the hotel type wifi login screens you’ll often find. So even if you need to enter login details or redeem a code, you’ll still be able to get connected and start streaming.

Just remember the remote!

Always get the best room rate

If you need to cover the cost of hotels yourself, it quickly mounts up!

Here are some really easy ways to save money:

Consistently book hotels through cashback websites. You can get 2.5% – 10% cashback on Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, Travelodge and Marriot through TopCashback.

Anyone can get a student card – here’s how to do it – you’ll then consistently have access to discounts and deals on hotels, restaurants, and much more.

Always book using a cashback credit card. The totally fee free AMEX Everyday card gives between 0.5% – 1% cashback, depending on how much you spend. As long as you set a direct debit to pay off the balance every month, it’s an easy way to reduce costs.

Get business rates direct. Emailing hotel management and arranging a price direct is one of the easiest ways to reduce costs. Many hotels do this and when you agree a discounted room rate direct, it will often be fixed for a set period, for example 12 months.

Take at least 1 home comfort

If you’ll be staying in hotels for extended periods, taking something that reminds you of home will help to counter that inevitable dull hotel décor.

Why not take some slippers, your favorite coffee, a book, or even just something to remind you of loved ones back home!

Take your own breakfast

If breakfast is included in the room rate, be sure to allow time to grab something even if you’re in a rush.

When it’s not included and you’ll be staying for a few days, it’s worth picking up a few bits on the way to the hotel.

Not sure if there will be a fridge? Grab some fruit or pastries – things that will still keep fresh-ish throughout your stay.

Check out what’s around the hotel in advance

Do your research before you even book to ensure your stay is much more enjoyable!

After a long day it will be nice to know there are cafes, restaurants, or a convenience shop within walking distance. It’s especially worthwhile doing your research if you stick to specific food types – or just outright crave certain food!

If you’re staying for longer and know you’ll have a day or two off, it’s worth making sure there’s something nearby that interests you. A train station to explore further, a cinema, or maybe a nice open park for a jog.
