Are you in Kota Kinabalu and missing a good western breakfast – I know I was. As much as I enjoy noodle soup for breakfast, there comes a point when you crave some home comforts.

Malaysia is a majority Muslim country and as such there are none of those pork sausages or that bacon you’re probably used to below – but that doesn’t mean it’s not great food.

How to get there

If you’re staying in the more touristic area of Kota Kinabalu, you’ll need to take a grab to get to Chiu’s. From Gaya Street to Chiu’s is around 20-minutes by car. A grab ride will cost 12-15 MYR one way. Is this trip worth it – absolutely!

Inside the café

Chiu’s is an inviting chic modern café. A light and spacious place with plenty of comfortable seating. Walking in here is just like walking in to their Instagram feed – somehow the food looks just the same as well!

They are open from 10:00AM – 11:00PM, with breakfast served from 10:00AM – 5:00PM. They also have separate lunch and dinner menus throughout the day. Make sure you use some Malay to order your food!

The menu – “Chiu’s comforting big breakfast”

Hot and cold coffee and tea, as well as chocolate drinks and smoothies range from 8 – 17 MYR. An Americano is 8 MYR, with a latte coming in at 10 MYR. Want to order your coffee in Malay?

The breakfast menu contains everything from a 3 cheese sandwich to bangers and mash – yeah I’m as confused as you are! The main event here is the aptly named “Chiu’s comforting big breakfast”. This one contains toast, scrambled eggs, roasted tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, sautéed spinach, beef bacon, homemade chicken sausage and hash browns. Yes, this comforting big breakfast tastes just as good as it sounds!
