Revolut
Revolut is a travel money app and card. This account lets you make foreign currency transactions and withdraw cash overseas with no fee up to very reasonable monthly limits. You need a UK address to open an account, they give you a free physical card, and there are no credit checks. App based banking lets you monitor your spending and control your cash on the road.
Evernote
Evernote is a free notebook app which lets you keep all the important information in one place. You can keep login details and password hints, track expenses, or even keep a diary with it – the possibilities are endless. You can create work books to group notes together by topic, and make notes and lists in a number of formats. You can take notes as text, sketches, audio and video.
pCloud
Imagine you are at the end of your 6-month trip travelling the world – in the last week you drop your phone overboard a ferry returning from an island in south Thailand. All of your photos from your travels would be fish food! Not with pCloud – another free app. This is cloud storage with a generous free allowance of 10GB and an automatic upload feature for your photos. Using this app and automatic upload means that your phone might be fish food – but your photos will all be safe and secure on the cloud.
Google Translate (Android/ iOS)
There are a number of language and translation apps available. But why go further than Google. Google Translate has improved significantly recently, with options for translating through your camera, handwriting, conversations, and voice. You can download as many languages as you want for free. A great feature is the ability to use your camera to translate. The app displays a live view and Google Translate will automatically and visually translate what your camera sees in real time in front of your eyes.
Google Maps (Android/ iOS)
Google Maps – you probably alreay have it installed. Yes, there are other map and navigation apps available. But again, why go beyond Google. Many look for other apps which have an offline feature. Well – Google already has this, and it’s probably better than a thrid party app, because, well, it’s Google. Just remember to download the offline map you want on WIFI before you arrive at your destination.
