Having experienced losing a phone on a recent trip to Asia, I know all too well the importance of having a good cloud storage app on your phone to back up your photos should the worst happen.

If you’re planning your own travels, you should definitely prepare by installing a good app for cloud storage should you lose or break your phone – one of those unfortunate things we never see coming! Thankfully, on this occasion I was prepared. Below I’ll discuss why I use pCloud when on the road.

Why use cloud storage when travelling

We have all probably lost or broken a mobile phone in the past. Yet, when this happens on the road it can potentially mean you’ve lost all those great photos you’ve travelling so far for. Sadly, no one can predict when this will happen – you need to be prepared.

What to look for in a good cloud storage app

Using a good cloud storage app, such as the one I use – pCloud, will save this disappointment like it did for me. Best of all – it’s totally free!

Some of the key benefits:

  • 10GB of free online storage when you sign up
  • Accessible from both phones and computers
  • Automatic upload feature
  • Can store photos, music and documents

When you sign up for an account you will receive 10GB of free storage. For the average traveler, this is plenty of storage for photos. There are a number of incentives, such as verifying your email and logging in from a desktop computer, which will give you additional storage again for free.

Automatic upload

Using the automatic upload function on pCloud meant that even after I lost access to my phone, every photo I had taken so far was safe and secure on the cloud. It is important that you set this function up before you leave – if for example you lose your phone – they will be gone forever if you don’t.

When you set up automatic upload, be sure to make sure that “Use mobile data” is unchecked. This means that pCloud will only ever use WIFI to sync the new photos taken to your online storage. Once this is set up, you don’t have to worry about losing a single photo. Your photos will be synced every time you connect to WIFI, for example when visiting a coffee shop, and every evening when you return to your hostel or hotel.
